SCHIEx Overview

The health care market in South Carolina is much like it is elsewhere within the United States. Health care is delivered by numerous physicians, hospitals, public health facilities, pharmacies, laboratories, and imaging centers. South Carolina residents receive their care from a personally crafted set of the caregivers. Some are cared for exclusively by one caregiver, but most utilize a panel of caregivers and move from one to another over time. As is the case elsewhere in the United States, the clinical information about South Carolina residents rarely moves with them, between caregivers or across time, resulting in a lack of continuity of care and increased expenditures.

SCHIEx (SKY-eks), the South Carolina Health Information Exchange, gives providers the ability to view clinical data to include medications, diagnoses, procedures, and common problems, thereby positively impacting continuity and quality of care provided, as well as assisting with controlling cost. This clinical data is driven from 10-years of paid SC Medicaid claims, as well as information shared from participating providers' electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

In the not-too-distant future, SCHIEx will also include lab results, immunizations, discharge summaries, e-prescribing, and operative and clinical notes. The data is kept safe and secure. Only authorized users may securely access and view a person's health record.

Through SCHIEx, caregivers get the healthcare information they need, when and where the need it, to support the best possible outcomes for their patients. SCHIEx's unique structure allows data to be organized around a person - not a transaction, provider or organization. By centralizing relevant patient data, SCHIEx helps practitioners make more informed clinical decisions at the point of care.

SCHIEx enables clinicians to reduce duplication and potential errors by providing them with information on services previously rendered. Through SCHIEx, providers can reduce inappropriate and unnecessary orders, paperwork and treatment delays. Providers gain insight into the care their patients have received at other locations - all at no extra cost. Yes, access to SCHIEx is free of charge. It simply requires a unique User ID and password.
