SCHIEx Governance
Developing a sustainable statewide Health Information Exchange depends on strong governance of the system. As recognized by the National Governor's Association, a permanent governance structure comprised of diverse stakeholders can provide greater accountability and enhanced long-term strategic planning. An interim governance committee was established by Executive Order for the South Carolina Health Information Exchange (SCHIEx) in October 2009.
The 11-member interim committee includes both private and public stakeholders and represents a broad coalition of South Carolina's healthcare community. The mission of the interim committee is to begin developing additional policies and procedures for SCHIEx and to facilitate the transition to a permanent governance committee. The interim committee receives support from attorneys specializing in governance, privacy and security, and other pertinent topics. It is anticipated that the South Carolina state legislature will authorize the establishment of a permanent governance committee in 2010.
By Executive Order, the interim committee includes the following representatives:

- Chief Executive Officer of the Office of Rural Health (Graham Adams, Ph.D.)
- President of the South Carolina Medical Association (John G. Black, M.D.)
- Chief Executive Officer of the South Carolina Primary Health Care Association (Lathran J. Woodard)
- President of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association (Don Ray)
- Director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (Emma Forkner)
- Director of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board's Office of Research and Statistics (Bobby Bowers)
- Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (C. Earl Hunter)
- Chairman of the Board of the Lakelands Rural Health Network (Sue Veer)
- President and Chief Executive Office of Health Sciences South Carolina (Jay Moskowitz, Ph.D)
